What is dental general anaesthesia?
Disclaimer: This Image is for illustrative purposes only. Individual results and patient outcomes may vary.
Dental general anaesthesia involves being fully asleep during your procedure, similar to a hospital setting, so you are unaware of the treatment taking place. It may be a suitable option for patients with severe dental anxiety, complex treatment needs, or those who prefer to have multiple procedures completed in one visit. As with all general anaesthesia, there are risks involved. Our team will discuss these with you thoroughly during your consultation.

Why patients choose general anaesthesia at Dentélle by WDC
Dental general anaesthesia may help patients who have been unable to access the dental treatment they need due to anxiety or complex needs. With general anaesthetic, you can expect:
- Managed comfort: Dental procedures are carried out while you are fully asleep, reducing awareness of the treatment.
- Efficient treatment: Multiple or complex procedures can be addressed in a single visit.
- Supported experience: A considered option for patients with severe dental anxiety or phobia.
- No memory of the procedure: You won’t remember the sights, sounds, or sensations of the dental treatment.
- Suitable for a range of needs: A considered option for patients with special needs or those who have difficulty remaining still during dental procedures.
- Same friendly faces: Our in-house general anaesthetic means you don’t need to travel to another clinic or go to hospital. You’ll be in our warm, welcoming clinic throughout.

What to expect from your general anaesthetic appointment
Step 1: Initial Consultation
Your treatment begins with a comprehensive consultation at Dentélle by WDC. During this visit, our experienced dentists will evaluate your dental health, discuss your medical history, and determine if general anaesthesia is a suitable option for you. We’ll explain the procedure, what to expect, and answer any questions you may have.
Step 2: Preparation for Anaesthesia
On the day of your procedure, you’ll be greeted by our friendly team (and Dogtors Bruce and Dave if you’re lucky!) and guided through the preparation process. Our experienced anaesthetist will review your medical history and explain the anaesthesia process. You’ll be asked to fast for a certain period before your appointment to support your safety during the procedure.
Step 3: Administration of Anaesthesia
Before the procedure begins, our experienced anaesthetist will administer the general anaesthesia. Throughout the procedure, our team will monitor you closely to support your safety and wellbeing.
Step 4: Performing the Dental Procedure
While you are asleep, our experienced dental team will carry out the necessary dental treatments. Whether it’s an extraction, multiple fillings, or a more complex procedure, our team will work carefully to complete your treatment.
Step 5: Recovery and Post-Operative Care
While you are asleep, our experienced dental team will carry out the necessary dental treatments. Whether it’s an extraction, multiple fillings, or a more complex procedure, our team will work carefully to complete your treatment.
Risks and Recovery
General anaesthetic is sometimes used for complex dental procedures and, like all medical interventions, it carries risks and recovery considerations.
Possible risks include:
- Nausea, sore throat or dizziness after anaesthesia
- Temporary confusion or drowsiness following the procedure
- In rare cases, allergic reaction or breathing difficulties
- Small risk of complications with blood pressure or heart rate, which are carefully monitored throughout
Recovery considerations:
- Patients remain under observation immediately after the procedure until stable
- Drowsiness can last up to 24 hours, so driving and operating machinery are not permitted
- A responsible adult must accompany the patient home and remain with them for the first day
- Many patients can return to normal activities the following day, depending on the treatment performed
Is dental general anaesthesia suitable for you?
Dental general anaesthesia may be suitable for a range of patients, including:
- Severe dental anxiety: A considered option for patients with significant fear or phobia of dental procedures.
- Complex or lengthy procedures: May suit patients needing extensive dental work or multiple treatments in one visit.
- Special needs patients: May benefit patients with physical, cognitive, or behavioural conditions that make dental treatment challenging.
- Gag reflex issues: May help patients with a strong gag reflex receive dental care.
During your consultation, our dentists will assess your specific needs and determine if dental general anaesthesia is a suitable option for your dental treatment.
