Let’s clear something up right away: “same day dental implants” doesn’t mean you walk in with a gap and walk out with a finished permanent tooth an hour later. That’s marketing spin, and it sets people up for disappointment.
Here’s what it actually means, who qualifies, and what you should realistically expect.
What “same day” actually means
Same day implants (also called immediate load implants or teeth in a day) means we place the implant AND attach a temporary tooth on the same day. You leave with something in the gap, not just a healing cap.
But here’s the thing: that temporary tooth isn’t your final restoration. It’s a placeholder. Your bone still needs 3 to 6 months to fully fuse with the implant before we can load it with a permanent crown that can handle normal chewing forces.
The temporary tooth is usually made softer and kept slightly out of your bite so it doesn’t put too much pressure on the healing implant. You’ll need to be careful with it.
Who actually qualifies?
Not everyone. And that’s not us being difficult, it’s us protecting your investment.
Same day loading works best when you have:
- Excellent bone density and quantity
- The implant achieves high initial stability during placement
- You’re in good general health
- You don’t grind your teeth
- The tooth being replaced is in a visible area (front teeth are often better candidates than molars)
It’s less suitable when:
- There’s significant bone loss
- You need bone grafting
- The implant doesn’t achieve adequate stability during surgery
- You have uncontrolled diabetes or other healing issues
- You grind or clench heavily
We assess this during your consultation and make a final decision during surgery based on how the implant seats.
The honest timeline
Day 1: Implant placed, temporary tooth attached (if you qualify).
Weeks 1 to 2: Initial healing. Soft food only. Be gentle.
Months 2 to 6: Osseointegration (bone fusing with implant). Your temporary tooth stays in place, but you need to be careful with it.
Final appointment: Once healed, we take impressions and create your permanent crown. This is what you’ll have for years to come.
So yes, you leave with a tooth on day one. But you’re not “done” for several months.
Why we don’t push same day on everyone
Some practices advertise same day implants like it’s the only option. We don’t, because it isn’t always the best option.
Traditional implants (where the implant heals under your gum before we attach anything) have decades of research behind them. They’re predictable. They work.
Same day loading is newer and slightly less forgiving. If something goes wrong during healing, you’ve got more at stake.
