Let’s be honest: you’ve probably already tried the whitening strips from the chemist. The ones with the bright packaging and the promises of a dazzling smile in 7 days.
The concentration problem
Over-the-counter whitening products in Australia are legally limited to 6% hydrogen peroxide. That’s enough to do… a bit. Maybe lift a shade or two if you’re consistent and patient.
Professional whitening? We’re working with concentrations up to 35% or higher, depending on the system. It’s the difference between a gentle rinse and an actual deep clean.
Think of it like this: you can wash your car with a bucket and sponge, or you can take it through a proper detailing service. Both involve water and soap. The results are not the same.
What professional whitening actually involves
At Dentélle, we offer two main approaches:
In-chair whitening: You come in, we protect your gums, apply professional-strength whitening gel, and often use a light to accelerate the process. About 60 to 90 minutes later, you leave noticeably whiter. This is the fast track option.
Take-home kits with custom trays: We make moulds of your teeth and create custom-fitted trays. You take these home with professional-grade gel and wear them for a specified time each day. Results build over 1 to 2 weeks. This gives you more control over the process.
Some people do both: in-chair to kick things off, then take-home to maintain.
Here’s what whitening can do
- Remove years of surface staining from coffee, tea, red wine, and general life.
- Brighten teeth that have naturally yellowed over time.
- Give you a noticeably lighter smile (typically 4 to 8 shades, depending on your starting point).
Here’s what it can’t do
- Change the colour of crowns, veneers, or fillings. These won’t bleach.
- Fix internal staining from antibiotics or trauma. That needs different treatment.
- Make your teeth an unnatural neon white. We’re aiming for bright and natural, not glow-in-the-dark.
We’ll assess your teeth during a consultation and tell you what’s realistic for your situation.
What about sensitivity?
Let’s address this directly, because it’s a real concern.
Whitening can cause temporary sensitivity, especially to cold. Most people experience some, few experience a lot. It typically settles within a few days of finishing treatment.
Professional treatment has advantages here: we can adjust concentrations, add desensitising agents, and modify your treatment plan if you’re struggling. That’s harder to do with a one-size-fits-all strip from the chemist.
How long do results last?
That depends heavily on you.
If you drink three long blacks a day and a glass of red every night, expect to need touch-ups sooner. If you’re more of a water and white wine person, results last longer.
Most people find professional whitening lasts 1 to 3 years before they want a refresh, with take-home trays being useful for maintenance.
